QB/T 1130-1991 Practical Guide: Right-Angle Tear Strength Test Method for Plastic Film

Nov 23,2025

Source: Link Testing Instruments Co.,Ltd.

QB/T 1130-1991, "Test Method for Right Angle Tear Performance of Plastic Film", is the core industry standard in China for testing the right angle tear strength of plastic films and sheets. This standard specifies the test method for the right angle tear performance of materials such as plastic films and sheets, and is especially suitable for the quality assessment of polyethylene blown greenhouse films used in agriculture.

I. Standard Positioning and Scope

  1. Standard Feature

This standard is a recommended standard for the light industry, currently in effect (until 2025), and clearly specifies the test method for the right-angle tear resistance of plastic films and sheets.

  1. Applicable Materials

Applicable to plastic films and sheets such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), especially widely used in agriculture to evaluate the tear resistance of greenhouse films.

  1. Test Principle

A tensile load is applied to the specimen using the XLW-500N intelligent electronic tensile testing machine, causing the specimen to tear at the right-angle cut. The maximum load during the tearing process (right-angle tear load) is recorded, thereby calculating the right-angle tear strength of the material. This method can effectively evaluate the tear resistance of materials at stress concentration points (right-angle cuts).

II. Specimen Requirements

  1. Dimensions:

Specimen Dimensions: (50±1) mm × (27±1) mm

Right Angle Cut Depth: (12±0.5) mm

  1. Directional Requirements:

Longitudinal (MD) and transverse (TD) specimens must be tested separately.

At least 5 valid specimens in each direction.

For ultra-thin materials (thickness < 20 μm), stacked specimen groups (3 groups, 5 pieces per group) are permitted, but it must be noted that the test results cannot be compared with single pieces.

  1. Quality Requirements:

The right angle cut of the specimen must be free of cracks, scratches, or processing marks.

The specimen should avoid the edges of packaging bags, welds, etc.

III. Testing Environment and Equipment Requirements

  1. Testing Environment

Temperature: (23±2)℃

Relative Humidity: 50%±10%

Conditioning: The specimen must be allowed to stand for at least 4 hours under standard conditions.

  1. Equipment Requirements

Automatic Tensile Tester XLW-500N

XLW-500N Intelligent Electronic Tensile Tester:

Compliant with GB 1040 Requirements

Tension Speed: 200±20 mm/min

Force Measurement Accuracy: ±1%

Measuring Range: Select an appropriate measuring range based on material properties (e.g., 500N)

IV. Test Procedure

  1. Specimen Preparation:

Cut the specimen according to standard requirements.

Measure the specimen thickness (average thickness at the right-angle cut).

  1. Equipment Adjustment:

Set the test speed to 200±20 mm/min.

Calibrate the clamp perpendicularity.

  1. Specimen Installation:

Clamp the specimen in the clamp.

Ensure the clamping length is ≤22mm and the force direction is perpendicular.

  1. Test Execution:

Start the testing machine and stretch the specimen until it tears.

Record the peak load during the tearing process.

  1. Data Recording:

Record the maximum tear force (N).

Save the load-displacement curve.

6. Result Calculation:

Right-angle tear strength (kN/m) = Maximum tear load (N) / Specimen thickness (mm)

For example: A greenhouse film specimen has a thickness of 85.6μm (0.0856mm) and a maximum tear load of 75N. Therefore, the right-angle tear strength is:

75N / 0.0856mm = 875.9 kN/m

V. Advantages of XLW-500NIntelligent Electronic Tensile Tester Produced by Link Testing

  1. Precise Measurement: Employs high-precision sensors (accuracy better than 0.5 grade), recording tear force valuesand displacement curves in real time, supporting data traceability analysis.

  1. Standardized Design: The equipment's clamping structure conforms to QB/T 1130-1991 requirements. The pneumatic clamping system ensures uniform force on the sample, avoiding errors caused by offset.

  1. Convenient Operation: The touchscreen interface supports multi-language switching, one-button start of the testing process, automatic report generation, and data export, significantly improving testing efficiency.

  1. Wide Application: In addition to greenhouse films, it can also be used for tear performance testing in food packaging, pharmaceutical materials, composite films, and other fields, meeting the needs of multiple industries.
